Everyone's moving from static websites to dynamic
websites. Sample applications of a database driven Website can be viewed on our
front page. Let's look at the advantages of dynamic compared to static
development. In summary, dynamic development is:
- Faster to develop
- Cheaper to develop and maintain
- Easier to maintain
Traditionally sites are constructed with a large number of static HTML pages.
Serving up pages and information dynamically, the number of pages can be dramatically
reduced. Read the following summary about static HTML pages vs. dynamic when
creating an online employee directory for your company.
If you had a company of 20 products, you would have to make the following
static HTML pages: one (1) main page to list all products and twenty (20)
detail pages for the products. Then, when an product information changes,
you will either have some HTML knowledge, and an HTML editor to make the changes,
or hire a web developer to make the changes for you. Either way it is costing
you money (Time is money!).
Now let's imagine a dynamic product directory. Instead of writing twenty one
(21) static pages, you could write three (3) pages, and that's it: one (1)
main page to list all products, one (1) page that describes details about
each product and one (1) page that allows users, to add/edit/delete products
to the database via a custom browser-based administration module
Maintain Up To Date Content
By moving from static to dynamic, Website content can be maintained more easily.
Dynamic sites also help ensure that the most accurate, timely information
is available to those who need it, when they need it. Continuing with the
product directory example, when you work with a static product directory and
a new person starts at your company, it may take a while for marketing to
provide you with that product information. Once you get it, you need to update
the main directory listing (using HTML) and create a detail page that has
all the product information. Then, you need to link the main directory to
the new product detail page and FTP it to the server.
While you are working, users of the directory may want to call the new product
but can't because they are waiting for you to update the directory and/or
push the page live. The directory isn't as fresh as it could be, and people
are frustrated because they have to wait for content.
If you had a dynamic site, web developers wouldn't even need to be involved.
As soon as the new product information was available, your staff could enter
data into the directory via the custom browser-based administration module
(no HTML required). This situation empowers the your staff to keep the directory
current and frees the web developer to work on more challenging projects.
Additionally, with a dynamic site, new information can be available immediately
(no need for waiting). Dynamic sites make it easy to keep content fresh. The
product directory is only one example, where you can save time and precious
development effort by going dynamic. Many other Web-based services take advantage
of dynamic applications, including weather reports, headline news, and online
stock tickers.
